Background
There is increasing recognition for the place of emergency ultrasound, including echocardiography. An example is FAST scanning in ATLS. There is a clear requirement for standardised training in emergency echocardiography. Further, it is proposed that peri-resuscitation echocardiography become a core competency for acute specialties. Although many courses exist that enable novice echocardiographers to gain some training in ultrasound theory and hands-on practice, the demand for emergency echocardiography and training challenges remain, including:- Standardisation of approach
- Ensuring when performed in the peri-arrest setting there is no interruption of CPR
- Access to training
- Maintenance of standards of training and individual practice
- Those trainees in echocardiography do not practice out with their competency
FEEL-UK has been devised by adapting existing researched and implemented echo courses which has been shown to successfully teach ALS-compliant echocardiography for the peri-resuscitation setting.
